In-between hype for Beyonce’s Coachella ‘tour documentary to end all tour documentaries’, Netflix has released a trailer for Chris Lilley’s long-awaited return to cultural satire. Okay, maybe it wasn’t long awaited by all, but there’s enough good mems of ‘Summer Heights’ for us to at least be intrigued. ‘Lunatics’ has everything we’ve come to expect from Lilley with equal parts ridiculous accents, Aussie idioms, and bat-shit characters. There’s Joyce, an ageing ex-porn star struggling to make ends meet. Becky, a first year undergrad with literally GIANT legs (she’s 7ft 3) and a predilection for getting her hair stuck in ceiling fans. Gavin, a young heir to an English country estate and just another one of Lilley’s characters struggling with a weird ‘stiffy’. Quentin, an incompetent real estate agent; Keith, a veteran retail employee who’s struggling with his love for a cash register (is this Lilley’s critique of capitalist society? Probably not.). Oh! And there’s Jana, a South African lesbian pet psychic – try saying that ten times fast- who’s in love with her assistant.
It’s a chaotic bunch, even for Lilley, and the trailer seems equally chaotic. But with some amazing moments and the occasional quippy line – ‘You’re acting like a slut.’ Becky says as she towers over her sister – we hope that this series represents Lilley’s return to the searing wit we loved in ‘We Can Be Heroes’.
There’s only one way to find out. Tune in on April 29th for the premier of ‘Lunatics’.
